Planning a Trip to the UK? Here’s What You Need to Know About the UK ETA
If you’re planning a trip to the UK from 08 Jan 2025 onwards, there’s a new step to consider. The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). While this might sound like an extra hassle, it’s a straightforward process designed to make entry into the UK more secure and efficient.
Here’s everything you need to know to navigate the process with ease.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is an electronic travel permit required for visitors and transiting passengers from countries that don’t require a visa. Think of it as a digital pre-check that ensures you’re cleared for entry before you even arrive. This means a smoother experience at the border and enhanced security for everyone.
Who Needs a UK ETA?
You’ll need to apply for an ETA if:
- You’re from a visa-free country visiting the UK for up to six months.
- You’re transiting through the UK, even if you’re not passing through border control.
Who Doesn’t Need an ETA?
- British or Irish citizens.
- Dual citizens traveling on a British or Irish passport.
- Those with visas or permission to live, work, or study in the UK.
- Residents of Ireland traveling directly from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.
How Do You Apply for a UK ETA?
Applying is simple and can be done online or via the UK ETA app. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Your passport (the one you’ll use for travel).
- A digital photo of your face.
- A way to pay the £10 fee (approximately $13).
Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll usually get a decision within three working days. However, it’s always best to apply early to avoid any last-minute delays.
How Long is the ETA Valid For?
Your ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During this time, you can visit the UK as many times as you like, staying for up to six months per trip. If your passport expires, you’ll need to apply for a new ETA.
What Can You Do With a UK ETA?
A UK ETA allows you to:
- Visit for tourism, family visits, short-term business, or study for up to six months.
- Perform permitted paid engagements or creative work under the Creative Worker visa concession for up to three months.
- Transit through the UK.
What Can’t You Do With a UK ETA?
There are some restrictions. With a UK ETA, you cannot:
- Stay for longer than six months.
- Work for a UK company or as a self-employed individual.
- Claim public funds.
- Marry, register a civil partnership, or give notice of either.
- Use frequent visits as a way to live in the UK.
If your plans include any of these activities, you’ll need to apply for a different visa.
How to Enter the UK With an ETA
Your approved ETA will be electronically linked to your passport. Upon arrival, you’ll need to:
- Use an ePassport gate, if eligible, or
- See a Border Force officer who will confirm your right to enter.
Keep in mind that an ETA doesn’t guarantee entry, it simply allows you to travel to the UK and present yourself for inspection at the border.
