French Tax

The French government has confirmed a significant increase in the departure tax for private jet flights, set to take effect on 1st March 2025.

This revised tax applies to all business aviation activities and is charged per passenger, per leg, for aircraft departing from France - arrivals are not affected. The new structure introduces three tax levels based on flight distance:

  • Shortest flights (up to 1,000 km) incur the lowest tax.
  • Mid-range flights (1,000 km – 5,005 km, e.g. to the UAE) are subject to a higher rate.
  • Long-haul flights (over 5,005 km, e.g. to Gabon) face the highest tax.

Importantly, the distance is calculated to the capital city of the destination country, regardless of whether the flight lands at a closer or more distant airport.

How Will This Impact Private Flights?

The tax is paid by the aircraft operator and incorporated into the charter price. From 1st March 2025, private jet operators will be required to collect between €210 and €2,100 EUR (£1,800 GBP) per passenger, a significant increase from the current €20 per passenger per flight. This change will primarily impact those flying long-range private aircraft.

Exemptions (Pending Final Confirmation)

While full details will be confirmed within the next two weeks, the following exemptions are expected:

  • Private owners flying their own aircraft
  • Medical and emergency flights
  • Helicopter flights
  • Passengers under two years old

Additional Considerations

  • Geneva Airport is classified as EU territory, meaning flights departing from there will not be subject to this tax.
  • Basel Airport is currently under review to determine if it falls under French jurisdiction for this tax.
  • Legal Challenge: The European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) has launched a legal challenge against the French government. While the outcome remains uncertain, there is speculation that within a year, the tax could be reduced, removed, or potentially increased.

We at Equinox are actively monitoring the situation and will update affected clients as new information becomes available. If you have any questions about how this tax may impact your travel plans, please do not hesitate to contact us.
